<p>One of the best-known French warplanes, the Breguet 14 made its first flight on 21 November 1916, and made its mark at the front during the summer of 1917 in both Bre.14 A.2 reconnaissance and B.2 bomber versions. Constructed from aluminum tube, the Bre.14 featured a back-staggered biplane layout and was powered by a 300-hp Renault 12F or Fiat A.12bis engine. Accommodation was provided for a pilot and an observer/gunner, who operated twin Vickers machine guns from a ring mount in the rear cockpit. The pilot had a single forward-firing Lewis gun mounted on the port side of the fuselage. Observation glazing was located in the sides of the rear cockpit, and light bombs could be carried under the wings. Initially, the A.2 had unequal-span wings, whereas the B.2 version had a full-span lower wing which also incorporated a rudimentary flap for extra lift. The flaps were later removed.

<p>The Air Service in France acquired 376 Breguet 14s, becoming 14A-2 and 14B-2 in US service. These were used by the day bomber squadrons in 1918 prior to the DH-4s entering service. In addition to the two main versions, a few Breguet 14E-2 trainers were acquired. A handful of Breguet 14s were dispatched to the US for testing with Liberty engines.
